Lorri W. Cooper

Lorri Cooper is a Principal at Cooper & Maersch LLC.  She practices in the area of intellectual property law primarily in the mechanical arts, consumer products, and medical devices field, with emphasis on patent and trademark prosecution, opinion work, client counseling, and IP licensing and technology transactions.

Lorri’s patent prosecution practice includes patent counseling services on matters related to patentability, patent validity, patent infringement, pre-litigation counseling, and patent portfolio development and management, with emphasis on developing strategic plans and procedures for maximizing U.S. and worldwide intellectual property rights in a cost-effective manner.  Lorri has drafted hundreds of patent applications and has experience with both utility applications and designs.

Lorri’s trademark practice includes US and international trademark prosecution, clearance, and enforcement.  Lorri regularly assists clients with filing and managing US and foreign trademark applications.  Lorri also assists clients with brand development and management, trademark and copyright infringement, domain name counseling, and copyright registration, with particular focus on consumer products and medical devices, among other products and industries.

Lorri’s IP transactional experience includes consulting on corporate IP M&A matters. She has drafted technology transaction documents and intellectual property licenses and conducted intellectual property due diligence.

Lorri has prepared utility, design, reissue, and reexamination applications in numerous product fields, such as packaging machinery, electromechanical devices, building products, medical equipment and devices, air bags, jet engines, pumps, valves, compressors, firearms, lighters, pens, luggage, office products, laminates, small machines, containers, circuit boards, connectors, golf clubs and shoes, helmets, cosmetic applicators, kitchen tools, bedding, mobile communication devices and keyboards, gastrostomy devices, board games, and business methods, among many others.

Prior to entering the legal field, Lorri worked for six years as a mechanical engineer for Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corporation, where she focused on commercial jet engine design and development. Her clients included Airbus Industries and Boeing.

Prior to forming Cooper & Maersch LLC, Lorri was a Partner with Medley, Behrens & Lewis, LLC in Independence, Ohio, a Partner with Pearne & Gordon LLP in Cleveland, Ohio, an Associate with Jones Day in Cleveland, Ohio, and an Associate with Pennie & Edmonds LLP in Washington, DC.
